History

Kalyan city has been seen in the history of the Maurya period. The name of Kalyan City has not been changed in recent history. Swarajya Aramar was started by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Kalyan port in the year 1657. While Kalyan's Muslim Subhedar daughter-in-law was found in the hands of Shivaji Maharaj's army, Shivaji Maharaj had repatriated her with dignity. Dombivali is mentioned in the inscription of King Harpal Dev in the year 1075. This inscription is in the village of Mahul near Turbhe port. It seems that Dombivali has existed since the 13th century. Portuguese had set up their tents at different places. There is mention of Dombivali in the Peshwa period. The town of Dombivali gets its name from the native 'Domb' people.

Kalyan is within the administrative division (tahsil) at a taluka level of the Thane District. Kalyan and its neighbouring township of Dombivli jointly form the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation. Twin cities are just 7 km away from each other. The town of Dombivali lies at a distance of about 49 km to the Northeast of the economic powerhouse of Mumbai. And around 17 kilometres from the last suburb in Thane district on the main central railway line.

KDMC is a municipal corporation in Thane district of Maharashtra state, India. A municipal corporation formed in 1983 to administer the twin townships of Kalyan and Dombivali. The municipal corporation has a population of 15,18,762 (2011 census). Due to its highly educated population, it is often called the second cultural capital of Maharashtra after Pune.
